Wendy's Classic Celebrates 15 Years
March 30, 2015
The Wendy's Charity Classic is in its 15th year of raising funds to support Wendy's Wonderful Kids, a special recruiting program designed by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to assist kids who've been waiting the longest for a "forever" family. An annual pro-am featuring professional golfers from The Legends Tour, official senior tour of the LPGA, the Wendy's Charity Classic has raised over $2.25 million since its debut outing in 1999.
"We are excited to host this event each year at the Country Club of Jackson," said Mark Behm, President of Stanton & Associates, the 64-store Wendy's franchise headquartered in Jackson. Michigan. "We have tremendous local support as well as that of the Wendy's family, and this makes it possible to help hundreds of children get placed with the parents they deserve."
Each year the event is implemented by over 150 area volunteers on the second weekend in August. This year's dates are Sunday, August 9 and Monday, August 10.
The Classic is traditionally kicked off with a Pairings Party and Adoption on Sunday evening that features a live and silent auction to help raise additional funds for the cause. Attended by over 200 people, it is typically set to a theme and costumes are encouraged. Themes in the past have included Safari, Under the Sea, Circus and Wild Wild West. Most recently, guests have been entertained amongts gangsters, flapper girls, pirates and gladiators. One time, they were transported to Vegas for the night.
This year's theme is Rock Star. It promises to be a rockin' good celebration of 15 years of supporting a terrific cause.
"We have a lot of familiar faces supporting this event," said Sue Fracker, Tournament Director. "Changing up the experience with the party theme and some of the contests out on the course helps keep it fresh, but honestly, the most important thing to everyone always comes down to the cause. We so appreciate that 90% come back every year."
The pro-am day is made special by the opportunity for amateur golfers to tee it up with a seasoned professional from the LPGA Tour. Hosted by Jackson native and LPGA Tour veteran Elaine Crosby who is now active on The Legends Tour, the Wendy's Charity Classic showcases many talented Legends Tour stars, including Nancy Lopez, an LPGA Hall of Famer, Jan Stephenson, Rosie Jones, Sherri Steinhauer, Cindy Figg-Currier and many more.
"The players love coming to Jackson," said Crosby. "The cause is really important to them and they have been a big part of our ability to make a difference for the kids each year."
Sponsors contribute $1,500 a spot to play with these Legends and the bulk of it goes to the charity.
"The event is stronger than ever," said Behm. "We've funded and maintain annually four recruiters around the state who focus on the kids who've been waiting a long time to be matched. The work is real and impactful. Our supporters are truly making a difference."
